If you’ve ever had a dental emergency, you know how stressful it can be, especially when your regular dentist isn’t available to handle your needs. You’re not just dealing with the discomfort – you also have to deal with visiting an unfamiliar dentist who doesn't know anything about you or your dental history.
We always arrange our schedule to leave extra time in our day to accommodate our emergency patients. Just knowing that you will be treated by a team of friendly professionals can instantly reduce your stress. At Gill Dental, you can be confident that your emergency care will be provided by people who understand your needs and will make your treatment a priority.
How to Handle a Dental Emergency
First, call our office immediately to let us know what’s going on. We’ll make arrangements to see you as quickly as possible, but there are steps you can take to manage certain emergencies before you get to our office for treatment:
- A lost filling or crown weakens your tooth. In most cases, Dr. Gill can simply re-cement the crown, so handle it with care and keep in a safe place until you get to our office.
- If you’re an adult with a knocked-out tooth, prompt action can make the difference between losing and saving the tooth. Don’t ever touch the root of a tooth that’s been knocked out as you can disturb tissue that may still be attached. Keeping the tooth moist is most important, so place it in a glass of milk, water, or even saliva until you get to our office. You can try to very gently place it back in the socket, but don’t force it and never touch the root itself.
- For toothaches, rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Use dental floss to gently remove any food particles lodged between teeth. An ice pack placed on and off your cheek in the affected area can help to relieve discomfort.
- If you crack a tooth, use warm water to rinse your mouth and cleanse the area. Place a cold compress on your face (for no more than 20 minutes) to minimize any swelling.
